A Throwdown at Barretts Equine...
Better known for challenging fellow cooking masters on Iron Chef America and Throwdown!, Bobby Flay took on the buying bench at Barretts March yesterday--without leaving the comfort of his New York home. Barretts has offered on-line bidding for the past three years. It has been popular at the mixed sales, but only 10 potential bidders registered for the March sale, and Flay was the only buyer to take advantage of the technology yesterday. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be," Flay said. "It was very efficient, and it was incredibly fast. It lets you know what the asking bid is, and you just click the button and your bid is registered instantly. This is definitely a new age for sales--I'm at home, in my sweat pants, and I'm bidding." Flay's latest acquisition is hip 77, a filly by Smoke Glacken out of Frolic Away (Pentelicus).

The gray is out of a half-sister to millionaire Smok'n Frolic (Smoke Glacken). Consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent, she was bought for $165,000. Flay, who attended Sunday's under-tack show after having a trip to California unexpectedly extended by the storm that hit the East Coast Friday,would have preferred to do his bidding from ringside,but was unable to attend the sale. I had to be back in New York, he explained. I would much rather be at the sale, because I like being in the environment, and there is just something about being there. But this new technology really taps into the buyers who can't make it to to the sale. I think it is great for the sales company.
